Šanson označuje odvětví francouzské hudby. Výraz chanson ve francouzštině odedávna označuje jakoukoli zpívanou hudební skladbu, v českém překladu píseň.  Tato píseň měla jednoduchou melodii a rytmus. Text býval často humorný a satirický.

Středověký šanson
Šansony ve středověku se daly poznat podle těchto znaků:
Jedná se o formu světské hudby –  vyhýbá se duchovním tématům
Skladby, jejichž text není moc vázán na sebe
Téměř všechny texty šansonů psané v lidovém, tedy francouzském jazyce

Moderní šanson
V 19. století vznikla ve francouzských kabaretech moderní forma šansonu.  Posun nastal i v textu šansonů, který se od jednoduchých slov změnil ve skoro básnická díla, textaři šansonů často byli básníci. Mezi nejznámější interprety francouzského šansonu patří např. Édith Piaf,  Yves Montand nebo Charles Aznavour.

Šanson v českých zemích
V českých zemích se šanson vyvíjel zejména ve 30. letech minulého století. Nejprve měl vysoké postavení Karel Hašler, později Jaroslav Ježek, a vše se vyvinulo v moderní šanson, jehož nejvýznamnější představitelkou byla Hana Hegerová.
