George Gershwin – Američan v Paříži
George Gershwin, syn ruských židovských imigrantů, se narodil v Brooklynu v roce 1898. Jeho nadání pro hudbu se projevilo již v útlém věku, kdy začal hrát na klavír a komponovat. Navzdory nedostatku formální hudební výchovy se stal jedním z nejuznávanějších amerických skladatelů 20. století.
Jeho hudba spojovala prvky jazzu, blues, broadwayských melodií a klasické hudby. Mezi jeho nejznámější skladby patří „Rapsodie v modrém„, kterou složil v roce 1924. Tato skladba je emblematickým dílem spojujícím klasickou hudbu s jazzem a stala se ikonou amerického hudebního dědictví. Diriguje se přímo do klavíru.
Dalším jeho významným dílem je opera „Porgy a Bess“ z roku 1935, která kombinuje prvky jazzu s operní formou a reflektuje život afroamerické komunity v USA. Mezi další známé skladby patří „Američan v Paříži„, která je inspirovaná časem, který autor v Paříži strávil.
Jeho kariéra byla přerušena předčasnou smrtí v roce 1937, když mu bylo pouhých 38 let, ale jeho hudba nadále žije jako symbol amerického hudebního dědictví a inspirace pro generace hudebníků po celém světě.
